Peter Thompson and Ruairí Taylor celebrate the 2019 Intermediate Cup success

Queen’s University manager Peter Thompson has signed a new two-year contract at the Championship club.

Thompson has overseen the most successful period in the student outfit’s history, guiding them to Premier Intermediate League title success and promotion to the Championship a year after they won the Intermediate Cup on a glorious night at Windsor Park.

This followed a spectacular run to the Irish Cup semi-finals in 2014 before famously beating Linfield in the fifth round of the cup in January 2020, one of the biggest shocks in the competition’s history.

A player at the club before taking over as manager in 2012, Thompson was delighted to sign the new deal which will take his spell at The Dub to over 20 years as player and manager.

“It’s an honour to manage a club that means so much to so many people, and myself and the coaching staff have a clear plan of how we see the squad continuing to grow,” Thompson said.

“We’ve made great strides as a team and a club in recent years, but we never stand still and will continue to improve. Establishing ourselves further in the Championship is our aim for next season and I know the players are hugely looking forward to returning for pre-season and preparing for the new campaign.

“The calibre of player that we are attracting to the club now is top quality and that, combined with a strong core of student players who know exactly what it means to play for Queen’s, will keep driving us forward.”

Queen’s Football Development Officer Ruairi Taylor warmly welcomed Thompson signing his new deal.

“Queen’s gave Peter his first opportunity in management and he has become one of the most dynamic and forward-thinking bosses in the Irish League,” Taylor said.

“His vision, decision-making and leadership have taken the club to heights it has never reached before. Everyone at Queen’s Sport is excited to have Peter extending his stay and we look forward to supporting him in every way possible.”
