QUEEN’S ROWING ACADEMY

QUBBC and QUBLBC both have a well-established history of rowing successes in GB, Ireland and worldwide.

Every year we have a large cohort of novices join the club and then work through the system into intermediate squads the following year with opportunity for some to then progress to the Academy and Elite Athlete Programme. There are also athletes who have jumped straight into the performance programme having had success at a high level previously.

Recent results from our Novice squads include medals at both British Universities and Irish Championships, making them British and Irish champions within a year of starting rowing! At the last British Universities Championships our Academy and Elite athletes won 6 medals, two of which were Championship Gold Medals.

In the performance squad of 2018/2019 Queens had 6 athletes representing GB and Ireland all over the world at various events including; U23 World Championships (gaining 2 silver medals) and U23 Europeans, Senior World Championships and Senior World Cup.

In September two of our athletes represented Queen’s University and Great Britain in the European Universities Championships in Sweden, Sam McKeown winning the Championship in his single, making him British, European and World Universities Champion concurrently.

Queen’s University athletes represented Scotland, Wales and Ireland at the Home International Regatta at Strathclyde, where more medals were won!

The 2019/2020 season has largely been lost to the Coronavirus pandemic, however two of our Elite athletes are still on course to represent Ireland at the European U23 Championships in Duisberg in September 2020.

Coming into 2020/2021 season Queens are aiming to continue this level of representation and success.

Students can avail of a range of support structures which include end-of-year bursaries based on performance, clothing, complimentary gym access, sports psychology, high-performance coaching, and a bespoke strength and conditioning programme from renowned practitioner Mike McGurn at our first-class Upper Malone facility. Queen’s Sport has also recently teamed up with Kingsbridge Private Hospital to provide the very best in physio and injury rehabilitation, through our Academy physio Shea McAleer.
